HobbyKing RX3S OrangeRX 3-Axis Flight Stabilizer V2 (V-tail/Delta/AUX) Part 2

okay this is part 2 of my review on the hobbyking three axis flight stabilization system version two and in this video we’re going to connect it up put some wires on it and and test it out and to do that I have some male-to-male servo connectors right here servo leads and I’ve got four of them because we need three here for the elevator aileron and rudder and then one for the on/off control of the unit I have my testbed airplane here and I’m going to mount the three axis stabilizer on the top of the wing so the first question is which way does it go according to what I’ve heard the pins go towards the rear and the pots towards the front of the airplane like this and then I’m also going to mount on here my receiver and of course you don’t have to use a hobbyking receiver you can use any receiver you walk basically because this stabilizer just passes the signals through from the receiver to the servos and you can use any receiver or radio combination you might have as far as I know so you’re not limited to say spectrum dsm2 you can probably use any of the other radios that are available on the market today any other radios and receivers this receiver has an S right at the top here to indicate the signal wire so that’s where the light colored wire is going to go towards the top so the first thing I’m going to hook up is the ESC I’m going to hook up the lead for the ESC and that’s gonna go on the throttle right there next let’s hook up the aileron channel from the receiver to the three axis and the white wire or a light colored wire in this case it’s more of a yellow is gonna go towards the back over here on the aileron channel right here so hook up the aileron on the receiver and go to the aileron on the three axis stabilizer right there just like that okay that was the aileron input now let’s go ahead and do the elevator and the rudder okay one guy was asking where’s the antenna on this thing well I got it I got a chuckle out of that because you know this this doesn’t have a receiver at all you have to provide your own receiver so naturally there wouldn’t be any antenna and also this thing doesn’t have heading hold or autopilot or GPS or anything else it’s going to keep it going in one direction forever you know without you giving some input all this thing is going to do is help stabilize the aircraft and a couple of reasons for that is you might just want to make the plane easier to fly and one of the big reasons is a lot of people do aerial photography and they just want the camera to be steady when they’re filming the aerial photography so it doesn’t rock all around and that’s another big use for it and that’s mainly what this is going to be for I don’t think we’re going to be using it to do 3d flight in other words hovering around doing those 3d stunts I don’t really think it’s good for that you can tell me if I’m wrong but I don’t see that happening now you notice this has an aileron right and an aileron left output on this and has one aileron input but two outputs and these are just the reverse of each other one output is opposite the other in polarity and you can use both of them if you have two servos that are mechanically the same direction you could hook one to the left and one to the right but mine or not mine are mechanically reversed already so what I did was I used the Y splitter and ran my servos into the Y

splitter down to one plug and I’m just going to plug that in the right aileron channel so that’ll be all right there like that now the question might also arise do you have to hook up all three channels you know aileron elevator rudder do you have to stabilize all three channels no you do not if I just want to stabilize one of them then I would just run the other servos directly to the receiver and bypass a stabilizer in other words I could just take these wires off and run my servos directly into this so if you just want to do the rudder that’s fine or if you just want to do the elevator or maybe just the ailerons you can do that or you could just do two of them or all three so it’s strictly up to the user not a requirement to use all three okay next I’m gonna plug the rudder servo into its output on the stabilizer making sure all of these wires are the light color it’s back in this side voltage is in the middle and ground is here at the end okay putting in yep [Applause] now the left aileron pins are not being used because as I said I’m using a splitter for both of the servos for the ailerons so those pins won’t be used and then there’s just one set left and that’s over here on the aux which is what we can control the gyro with remotely to turn and off and on and I’ve got a wire for that but before I do it I just want to say that there is no in-between with this switch from what I’ve heard either the either the state largest all the way on or all the way off you can’t put it on a variable pop and control the the whole unit like it’s some kind of master gain that won’t happen it’s either on or off now on my receiver I have two unused ports here one is the gear and one is the aux and so I can use either of those switches on my radio I can use either the gear switch or the aux one on my radio is actually flaps so I could use the flap switch or the gear switch to control the gyro on/off function I think what I’m gonna do is just use gear gear the gear switch is in a handy position for me so I’m just going to plug that wire on the gear and run that to the aux and that’s how easy the hook-up is it’s not a whole lot of rocket science to it and the wires go in pretty much straight across from each other on the part number there is an RX 3’s designation on hobbyking RX 3’s now the 3s sounds like it might be a three cell system like you would hook up a 3-cell battery well first of all this doesn’t even have a battery input like the old one did there’s no place to plug on a man and furthermore you don’t need to hook a battery to it because it’s getting its power off the receiver bus in other words this middle red wire goes over here to the voltage on the receiver bus all the red wires do so it’s getting voltage from the receiver and the receiver is getting the voltage from the ESC through the throttle channel so the voltage is provided by the B EC on the east on the ESC if that makes any sense there’s a B VEC built into the ESC and the voltage is coming from that and it’s the right voltage to run this system if we did hook a battery to this we would risk the chance of damaging the three acts of stabilizer because it’s finicky about having the right voltage I think somebody asked me one time could this be used to stabilize a gimbal and I thought they were talking about the gimbal sticks on the radio and I was really puzzled about that question but I’d seen it asked again on some of the discussions and I think what they’re

talking about is the gimbal on the quadcopter or some kind of tricopter or whatever you got that holds the camera the camera gimbal that swings the camera around and tilts it could this stabilize that yes I would say it probably could it would provide some stabilization but you’d probably be better off in other words if you want to keep your gimbal level you probably need something with an accelerometer so this probably wouldn’t be the best thing to use but it might be worth the try cuz it is fairly inexpensive but these just keep in mind something with an accelerometer might do a better job okay let’s test this thing out I’m gonna turn on my radio which is a dx8 spectrum compatible but remember you don’t have to use the spectrum compatible radio you could use any radio and reciever you want this particular unit okay so I’m there let’s just go down to where we got the monitor right here and I just want to show you something I don’t know if you can see this but when I flip the gear switch it’s already set up to go from a hundred percent at one end down to negative one hundred percent that’s the way it is on my radio now let me move it a little closer right there see that over on the right negative 100 okay then it goes to a hundred all right so that’s that so my gears which should be working let’s go ahead and we’ll just go ahead and turn on the plane and I’m gonna do that by plugging in the xt60 connector under here now needless to say I’d already bound this receiver to my radio before so I didn’t have to go through the mining process which would just be putting a jumper on there okay you can see the flaps are already working when I give the playing some role I don’t flip the gear switch now you can see it’s quit also for the remote switch to work to shut this on and off you’re gonna have to enable it now with least with mine when it came from the factory all of these switches were set to normal so when this switch here which is called aux control gyro it’s set to normal you cannot do remote control of the gyro so in order to enable the remote control you have to switch it to back towards the back to reverse so I’m just gonna do that okay now it’s on reverse just like that so with the flip of the switch right here I can turn it on and I can turn it off right now it’s off seems to be working for me I know there was some discussion about there still being some hunting or something when it was off I’m not really getting that once in a while I get a click or something but you can always look at your monitor like I did and just make sure your your gear switch or whatever your switch you’re using is going the full range from $100 Eero or minus 100 whatever you have to have on your radio so that should work now besides the aux control gyros which which we’ve said to reverse there is also reverse for the rudder elevator and aileron if you need to change the way they react and then there’s two switches for the V tail configuration and Delta configuration the V tail switch is to set up for a plane that looks something like this where you have a ve tail on

the rear and the delta switch is for planes that have Elavon x’ and they look something like this flying wing plane that has just two flaps on it and that’s a setting for that now my son John asked me what would happen if you had the v-tail and the Delta switch on at the same time well the answer is I don’t know maybe somebody will try it and let me know what happens it’s probably going to be pretty messed up I’d imagine okay and then just a short note on the pots here for the gains I found that these pots now have a lot more control than version one version two seems to be much more adjustable you don’t have to worry about just adjusting it in the last little bit of the range it seems to be that they’re all more linear now and the adjustment the adjustments are much easier to make okay so there is no switch for flapper ons or flaps and so the question is what do we do about that and the answer is you have to use a workaround either just have one aileron go through the three axis stabilizer so that you can mix flaps in or you could use some detail mixers that cost about three dollars and put one of those on each aileron output and then mix in some flaps with those but that would require a whole nother video and I don’t want to get into that right now this video has already run in about 20 minutes so I think we’ll talk about that some other time okay now here’s the question I had and I’d kind of like to mount this sideways underneath the plane you know down in here somewhere and like I thought my receiver right here and I’d like to put the gyre over here so the question is can you mount it sideways and I think the answer to that is yes with a certain caveat like if I was now that sideways like this and incidentally this new model that has a nice light on it that the other didn’t have I don’t remember a light like that on the previous version one but anyway if you get it sideways like this then I’ll turn on my gear switch over here see it still works as far as the ailerons go but the problem is when you do say yeah the elevator moves in instead of the rudder and when you when you do pitch the router moves instead of the elevator so it’s backwards so if you do want to mount it sideways let me turn this off your switch off okay so if we do win amount of sideways I think all we have to do is swap the elevator and rudder lead for both the input and the output on the on the three axis stabilizer and that will switch them around so that it can be in this orientation okay I put the unit sideways and reverse the cables for the elevator and rudder on the input and output and I’m going to turn on the gyro strip and now everything’s working okay as far as the rudder and elevator and someone might ask well does that reverse it on the radio no it’s fine on the radio we still use the rudder and elevator just like normal [Applause] okay so that brings up another question does the plane have to be level when you turn it on when you turn on the three axis flight stabilizer does it all have to be level and the answer is no the plane just has to be static in other words not moving around so when I plug it in as long as it’s just sitting here flat for a few seconds while it’s

initializing it’ll be okay now the reason this receiver is blinking is because I didn’t cycle my radio it’s like it’s thing oh you had to drop out but anyway no you don’t have to have the thing level when you plug it in so that’s about it for now I may make another video later about flying the thing but I think when I do I’ll probably mount this unit on my Bixler and not use this particular plane because the Bixler is the one I want to do aerial photography with and I prefer to try it on that so that’s all for now we’ll see you later
